Philippians 2:5-11
Let this same mind be in you…
                        Philippians 2: 5
“He can be so condescending.” The phrase reeks of negativity, perhaps riling us up as we think of moments when lofty souls have insinuated that they know more, have more, see more… are more than we. And yet “condescension” itself can compete with itself in meaning. In one moment the word references some of our most irritating exchanges with others. In another it embodies the incarnation and calls us to emulate the one who continues to show us that lessening is the truest path to more.

The early Christian hymn Paul includes in Philippians 2 is a song of Christ’s condescension. It employs God’s saving,self-emptying love as a siren signaling us to walk a similar path. Instead of looking down on us or talking down to us, Christ condescended to become like us so that we might somehow, with Him, ascend. "Let the same mind be in you that was in Christ Jesus, who, though he was in the form of God, did not regard equality with God as something to be exploited, but emptied himself, taking the form of a servant, being born in human likeness. And being found in human form,he humbled himself  and became obedient to the point of death—even death on a cross."

This is the week called Holy. This is the week Christ’s condescension reaches its culmination. As you move through it, make every effort to “let the same mind be in you that was in Christ Jesus.” He knew what was waiting for him past the palm branches. He knew what his passion for us would require. He knew where his self-emptying would lead. He knew that his lessening would make others so much more.

As we move with him toward the darkness of Good Friday and the exultation of Easter Sunday, let this mind be in you.
