Jimmy Nickell Honored at BNG Dinner

The Baptist News Global organization is holding their board meeting in our building this week. Baptist News Global, as a brand, was born Oct. 13, 2014. But the brand genesis was a merger Jan. 1, 2014, of Associated Baptist Press, founded in 1990 as the only independent news service created by and for Baptists, and the Religious Herald, founded in 1828 as the voice of Baptists in Virginia and, in recent years, the Mid-Atlantic. The Baptist News Global brand communicates the vision and scope of the news organization while also positioning BNG to explore additional alliances and collaborative agreements in the future. We know them as a partner organization within CBF life. David Wilkinson is the Executive Director & Publisher.

2BC member Jimmy Nickell was honored at an awards dinner of this organization last evening. Jimmy was presented teh Founders Award which recognizes individuals and organizations that have embodied BNG's founding principles and have supported its mission through significant professional or financial contributions.  He has been an influential leader and support of the Associated Baptist Press, the predecessor to BNG, since 1990. He retired from the BNG board last year. “Jimmy Nickell has been a stalwart champion for an independent press for Baptists that is also trusted and respected by Christians in other faith traditions and by editors and reporters in the religious and secular news media,” said Kyle Reese, pastor of Hendricks Avenue Baptist Church, Jacksonville, Fla., and chair of BNG’s board of directors. “His remarkable commitment to ABP, and now BNG, has been an inspiration to me, to our board, and to the donors who make BNG’s work possible.”

Bill Webb, former editor of the Word & Way, was also honored with  the Greg Warner Lifetime Achievement Award in Religious Journalism. The award, bearing the name of ABP’s longtime executive editor, was created by the board in 2009 to honor journalists whose body of work has contributed in significant ways to the understanding of religion in American society. Webb, who served as editor of the Missouri-based Word & Way newsjournal for more than 20 years until his retirement last December, also served on the board of ABP/BNG for 10 years.

Mr. Nickell: Congratulations, deserved recognition. Although I am not directly aware of all your work with the ABP and the BNG, I am aware of your witness to others and your long term commitment to organizations and efforts in which you support. I miss working with you and hope you are doing well. Be blessed, Clay Berry
