Second Friends by Brooke Fisher

“Whoever welcomes one of these little children in my name welcomes me.” (Mark 9:37)

Can you imagine the excitement, happiness, apprehension, and wonder that surrounds 96 preschoolers as they embark on their first day of school? Of course, there are usually some tears too! But oh, the excitement. I got to experience it first hand as I helped welcome 96 students through the Second Friends Preschool doors August 21st and 22nd. It was their first day, but as the new director, it was also my first day. We were ready to take on the 2017-18 year together.

I have the unique opportunity to welcome these sweet friends every morning as I help them from their cars in the drop off line. I get to be the first smiling face our students see each morning, but I am not alone in welcoming them to school. From our aides who greet students at the school door, to the volunteer church members who read with them while they wait, to the teachers who say hello and offer hugs as they enter the classroom; we are a lucky group of people.

Not everyone is called to work with children, but I feel fortunate that God gave me the desire to spend my days with kids. I see the innocence, curiosity, joy, and love in their faces, and know they are a gift from our creator. I consider it a privilege to be able to welcome them each day and share Jesus’ love through our interactions. Working with children offers the opportunity to help shape lives at a time when they are growing and learning more about the world.

At Second Friends, we have the awesome responsibility to impact children as they develop academically, socially and spiritually. The days are not always easy, but there is a great reward in working with children. Those who have been called to this work love welcoming children just as Jesus did. I am very fortunate to spend my days welcoming the children of Second Friends!
