Deacon 2011: Teaming Up for Service

Dear Fellow Servant,

Whether you are Active, On-Leave, Retired, or Emeritus, I want to let you know about our upcoming Deacon Weekend, February 4-6.  I encourage ALL Deacons and spouses to join us Friday evening for our annual banquet.  We will celebrate our legacy of service and enjoy fun and fellowship around the tables.  Saturday morning is our annual retreat, a time for Active Deacons to recharge and to plan for the year ahead.  On Sunday morning, February 6, we will ordain our two Associate Deacons.  I hope each of you will plan to be in worship at the 8:30 a.m. or the 11:00 a.m. service as we lay hands and offer our blessing to Cathy Baker and Mark Hilton.

Please see the information below, mark your calendar with these important dates, and make reservations where needed. One more bit of fun:  we’d love to display your team photos or individual shots of you in uniform, team pennants, jerseys, letter jackets, trophies—whatever you have from your “team days.”  Please bring your items to share to the church no later than Wednesday, February 2nd.  We’ll have a collection box in the church office.

Friday, February 4—Banquet

Team Time:  Celebrating Our Winning Deacon Team!

Time:  6:00–8:00 p.m.

Cost: $8 per person

Location: Social Room

Childcare is provided—please indicate ages of children when making your reservation.

Join us as we celebrate our legacy of service at Second Baptist Church!  ALL Deacons and spouses are encouraged to attend.  We’ll enjoy a wonderful meal catered by Debra’s Kitchen and entertainment from the acapella jazz group, “ReVerb,” as well as from our retired pastor, Dub Steincross. (Yes, you read that correctly! Dub will deliver a performance you won’t want to miss!) We will have a team of our young people there acting as servers, and they would very much appreciate any contributions you might make to a tip jar on your table to help them earn funds towards our 2BC summer student trips.

Team Time:  Putting Together a Game Plan

Time:  8:30 a.m. breakfast; 9:00 a.m.–12:00 p.m. retreat

No cost

Location: Assembly Room

Childcare will be provided on request —please indicate ages of children when making your reservation.

We will begin our morning at 8:30 with breakfast hosted by our past Deacon Chairs.  Our program starts at 9 with musical worship led by Jordan Groves.  We will then have workshop time to dream and to plan our projects and ministries for 2011—and possibly beyond.  This is a key event in our Deacon year.  I hope you will make the workshop a priority.

Reservations for the meals and for childcare are due to the office by Wednesday, February 2.
