FAMILY HISTORY

“These are the generations . . .” How often we read this in the Bible, so we know family history is important. “Remember . . . teach these things to your children.” Discovering your past and seeing God’s leading through all the generations gives us a new appreciation of His goodness and reminds us of our responsibility to pass this inheritance on to our children.

Family history must be the broadest of studies for it includes:

• history –”Your great-great grandfather fought in the Civil War!”

• geography –“How did they get from Virginia to Kentucky?”

• economics –“They moved from Vermont to Kentucky for better farm land.”

• sociology –“A whole group of Puritans came together from England.”

• psychology  – “Why did that ancestor cut half his children out of his will?”

• religion – “Did they really drown her for being a witch?”

• genetics –“That shortened little finger is a family trait.”

• politics – “They never moved, but lived in five different counties because the counties were divided and renamed as the population grew.”

• technology – “Technology has become key in doing the historic research.”

There is a lot of laughter in our meetings. We laugh at some of the foibles of our ancestors and determine to be more patient with our family and friends. We laugh at our own mistakes and misunderstandings as we delve into unfamiliar material and teach and encourage one another. We laugh because genealogists are funny people. Who else would think that a step backward was progress? Who else can recite the last eight generations, but can’t remember her nephew’s name?
