GOOD SHEPHERD Ministry at Second Baptist Church

What is the Good Shepherd ministry in our church all about?

The Second Baptist Church Good Shepherd Ministry is designed to keep the our congregation, the homebound and the sick connected with the church when they are unable to attend our worship services. One Sunday morning in 1992, Tom Lankford presented this idea to the congregation at Second Baptist Church, and the ministry was implemented and has been going strong ever since. This team regularly cares for more than 35 senior adults who are either in nursing homes, assisted living facilities, or in their own homes. This ministry provides visits, phone calls, cards, gifts for special occasions, as well as anything else to encourage this group and all the members of Second Baptist who may have a need.

Our Good Shepherd Ministry volunteers carry out this vital ministry. "We want those members in need or confined to home to feel like part of the Second Baptist Church family too!" says Doris Stratton, this years director of the ministry. Volunteers are enlisted for one day each week. They come to the church on their assigned day. A notebook listing each church member’s name, address, birth date, and detailed information on current needs and how to proceed is available at the Good Shepherd desk. The volunteers keep busy by telephoning homebound people, mailing birthday cards, get-well cards, and sympathy cards, or visiting care centers. "Being a Good Shepherd leaves one with a good feeling of having been of help," says Doris Stratton. "Receiving a card or a phone call means so much to a homebound person." If you would like to be a part of this ministry please call Doris Stratton (792- 0786) or for more information you may call the church office. (781-2824.)
