Our History with Meals on Wheels
Second Baptist Church has a long history with Meals on Wheels, starting before it was formed. In early 1973, Bill Riggs, then Minister of Education at Second Baptist, was concerned that some of the elderly in our church and our town weren’t eating balanced meals and could benefit from a hot meal at noon. He approached the Liberty Ministerial Alliance and was appointed chairman of the committee that gave birth to the local program. He was president of the non-profit board for many years. Bill Turnage donated his legal services in setting up the corporation.
On June 18, 1973, Meals on Wheels of Liberty began preparing and delivering hot, nutritious meals to the elderly, ill and disabled. Second Baptist Church people took leadership. Volunteers from 2BC and others in town prepared and packaged the meals in our kitchen; others picked up and delivered the meals from our church; and the church staff took calls about the program. Irene Thomas served as secretary on the original board and subsequently was treasurer and coordinator of the entire program for 12 years until 1986.
Since April of 1986, the meals have been prepared by Liberty Hospital, so that special dietary needs could be met and an increased number of meals could be provided. Meals on Wheels continues as a non-profit housed at City Hall. Many volunteer drivers continue to serve each week. Churches and other organizations take turns on a rotating basis to provide volunteer drivers. Second Baptist provides drivers two months each year.
Second Baptist continues to receive thanks and praise from Meals on Wheels for so faithfully continuing to support this ministry in Liberty by providing drivers and financial support.
