WORSHIP GATHERINGS AT SECOND BAPTIST CHURCH
Gathering every Sunday morning as a faith community to worship God is important at Second Baptist Church. In fact, it’s the most important thing we do. We follow the instruction of Jesus when he said that the greatest commandment was to “Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind” (Matthew 22:37).
Bruce Leafblad defines worship this way: “Worship is communion with God in which believers, by grace, center their mind’s attention and their heart’s affection on the Lord, humbly glorifying God, in response to His greatness and His word.” So when we gather, our focus is on God.
Worship Gatherings
8:30 a.m. Worship (Tutt Chapel)
Between 60 and 80 worshipers join each Sunday morning at 8:30 a.m. in Tutt chapel. (Located on the southwest corner of the building.) This intimate worship environment invites the congregation to participate in a smaller, more personal worship setting. Accompanied by piano and sometimes guitar, the hymns and songs of the 8:30 a.m. worship seem to take on a quiet, gentle meaning. The sermon and scriptures are the same as the 11:00 a.m. worship. On communion Sundays, the Lord’s Supper is offered during this service also. Our Welcome Center and Coffee Bar open at 8:00 a.m. on Sundays.
11:00 a.m. Worship (Sanctuary)
About 400 people gather in our open and airy main sanctuary each Sunday morning at 11:00 a.m. The worship is traditional with a passionate commitment to experiencing the word of the Lord and growing into a more personal relationship with God. Our wonderful pipe organ and grand piano are the foundation of the music, often supplemented with handbells, guitars and orchestra.
Both services have opportunities for gatherers to hear God’s word, pray together, sing in a variety of styles, contemplate the presence of God in quietness, and hear an uplifting and challenging message from our pastor.
