Again by Larry Kuhlman
“Go and show John again, those things that you do hear and see.” (Matthew 11:4)
Jesus asked the multitudes an interesting question. “What went ye out in the wilderness to see?” Then he reminded the people, they had gone out to verify first-hand that the strange, weirdly dressed man they found there was indeed a prophet of God. Jesus would raise the reputation of the prophet John by affirming John’s ministry. John was the messenger who pointed the way to the Savior.
After John was put in prison, he would continue to hear about the works of Jesus. Even so, he needed reassurance that Jesus was the long-awaited Messiah.
John will not get a “yes” or “no” answer from his followers. Instead, when they question him, Jesus lauds John but then directs attention to his own ministry and its gospel message.
I am fascinated by the word, “again,” and Jesus patiently relating to John—again—the mighty deeds that had been and were being accomplished.
This is the Christmas season again. Again, we celebrate the traditions that reflect God’s gift of Christ to the world. We attend holiday church services and sing carols about the birth of Christ. We recognize and reaffirm our commitment to God at Christmas. Our faithfulness to the Christian rituals, traditions, and beliefs are a witness to our family, neighbors, and friends that Christ’s coming has brought meaning and purpose to our lives.
Demonstrate again this year at Christmas what you have seen, heard, and experienced. Seek ways to serve daily in your walk with Christ. Let us reaffirm the certainty of our faith AGAIN this Christmas.
